March 2012Trip to Pategonia
My son and I traveled to Bariloche, Patagonia, for a fly fishing trip. We were so fortunate that the Hollen's home was available through 3RD HOME. Our trip to Bariloche required a flight to Buenos Aires then a second flight, from a different airport in Buenos Aires, to Bariloche. You can also get there via Santiago, Chile. The home is located in Arelaquen, a meticulously maintained private gated golf and polo community about 15 minutes outside of Bariloche, on Lago Gutierrez. Mike Hollen, the owners' son, was just great in helping us make travel arrangements, in giving suggestions on what to do and where to go in the area, and in giving practical advice about what to expect and how to enjoy our stay. We were frequently in contact via phone or the internet, both before and during our visit. The home is absolutely beautiful, has comfortable furnishings, an excellent kitchen and amazing views. The owners, Mike and Joni, were kind enough to leave us two excellent bottles of their own Hollen Vinyard wine! Diego Grunstein, sales director of the Arelaquen resort, was exceptionally helpful in helping us get our feet on the ground, arranging a rental car, and generally making us feel welcome and at home. The restaurant at the Lodge is wonderful, quiet and had great food and a terrific wine selection. We spoke rudimentary and poor Spanish, and were relieved that most of the people at the resort spoke excellent English. The town of Bariloche is located on the shores of large alpine lake, Nahuel Huapi, and is quite picturesque. There are plenty of good restaurants and nice shops there. The whole area around Bariloche is beautiful, and we enjoyed driving around the famous 7 lakes area and exploring Villa la Angustura, San Martin de las Andes, Junin de las Andes and Alumine, all small and quaint towns, each with its own type of charm, shops and restaurants. Not only were there good Argentinian and Pategonian wines, but each town had several "artesan" beers. And the fly fishing was awesome. We could not have had a better time.”
