- SKY-WAKA – Year-round gondola ride from Whakapapa Village, up Mt Ruapehu, providing outstanding views of Tongariro National Park.
- SKI-FIELDS [circa June-Oct] – Half-hour away is NZ’s largest ski-field Whakapapa, and an hour away is Turoa ski-field (both on Mt Ruapehu).
- WORLD-CLASS FLY-FISHING – The Ruapehu District has top rainbow & brown trout angling locations ‘everywhere’ including just 5-mins from the accommodation. Great idea to book in with a local guide.
- THE MIGHTY WHANGANUI RIVER – Whether kayaking along the river for 1-5 days, or jetboating to the incredible Bridge to Nowhere and wonderful Blue Duck Station, or doing a mix of cycling+kayaking, there are options to suit all.
- OHINETONGA LAGOON TRACK – In the local village just a few minutes away, is this lovely 2-hour walking trail – a great place to enjoy a picnic and a swim en route.
- GATSBY NIGHT or AGATHA CHRISTIE MURDER MYSTERY EVENING – Plan your own fun evening. Stop at a “$2 Shop” to grab some feather boas and fedora hats, to create your own wee 1920s party – heck the Post Office is like staying in a Cluedo House!

- WHANGANUI RIVER – Being the world’s 2nd natural resource ever given the status of being its own legal identity, the mighty Whanganui River is of enormous sacred importance to local Maori … and being on the river feels practically prehistoric.
- FORGOTTEN HIGHWAY – Just 15-mins away is the start of the extraordinary Forgotten Highway, enjoyed best on rail-cart tours journeying along the decommissioned railway line in your own individual converted golf-cart. A fun day!
- WAIOURU ARMY MUSEUM – For any military buffs, this is an excellent museum to enjoy.
- POPULAR PLACES TO STOP EN ROUTE FROM/TO AUCKLAND – One way via Otorohanga’s Kiwi House and Waitomo’s GlowWorm Caves; and one way via Lake Taupo, Rotorua & Hobbiton.
